Abstract
Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the community-based initiatives and their impact on sustainable development goals (SDGs) achievement in urban slums in Cameroon.
Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries.
Findings: The study indicate that these initiatives, often driven by grassroots organizations and local residents, play a crucial role in addressing various challenges prevalent in urban slum settings. Key findings suggest that such initiatives contribute to improvements in several SDG areas, including health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. For instance, community-led healthcare programs have enhanced access to essential services and reduced disease burdens, while education initiatives have increased literacy rates and school enrollment among children in slum communities. Furthermore, women-focused empowerment programs have promoted gender equality and economic opportunities, fostering social inclusion and poverty reduction. Additionally, environmental initiatives, such as waste management and sanitation projects, have enhanced living conditions and mitigated environmental degradation in slum areas.
Implications to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social capital theory, community development theory and intersectionality theory may be used to anchor future studies on assessing the community-based initiatives and their impact on sustainable development goals (SDGs) achievement in urban slums in Cameroon. Practitioners should prioritize community participation and empowerment in the design, implementation, and evaluation of CBIs to ensure their relevance and effectiveness in addressing the diverse needs of urban slum residents. Policymakers should recognize the integral role of CBIs in achieving SDGs and prioritize supportive policy frameworks that facilitate the scaling up and institutionalization of successful initiatives.
